If you are a trail runner and end up doing a lot of downhill, how do you prevent your ball of your foot from working as a brake when going downhill?
Basically the same idea as running on a flat surface: Get your feet underneath your body. To do this on a downhill, you have to shorten your stride and, probably, increase your cadence. You’ll want to focus on getting your feet OFF the ground quickly, too.
I don’t want to sound preachy but barefoot running shoes have been a revelation since I first started when I was 30..I’m not even naturally a runner with size 13 flat feet! Before this I used “air cushioned” shoes from a VERY well known brand..Not to diminish them mind because actually they took steps towards something like a barefoot shoe but it was still cushioned, just more flexible! Of course Im not gonna lie it was tough to start with..I got an Achilles injury from those first weeks..After 6 months of healing and trial once again, I gradually re-introduced with another well known brand..These were awesome shoes and eventually I loved running so much more with zero drop (I guess the were racing flats).. As Ive got older (I’m 47 now) my running has got more enjoyable , better and zero problems with knee pain unlike in my 20s..
BUT, these manufacturers for some reason withdrew these awesome shoes and started going to cushioned boats once again..WHY!!!? I thought I was gonna have to be consigned to botching indoor Artificial turf soccer shoes or something..Finally came Xero shoes..What a discovery..! I think there’s only 2 more brands which are TOO wide for me and over priced (but nice shoes) which are options for me..My girlfriend tried them and were a revelation for her (she was prescribed orthotics from a local running “specialist) which was actually just adding weight and making her running worse../weaker.. I think people need to re-think their sports shoes..PLEASE keep up the work Xero!!
